The Ultimate Release Day Checklist for Independent Artists

Release day is the most critical 24 hours of your campaign. Everything you've been building toward — the strategy, the assets, the team coordination — comes down to execution. Here's everything you need to do, broken down by timing.

The Night Before

Preparation is everything. Don't leave these for the morning.

  • Verify your release is live on all DSPs — Check Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, and Deezer. Use incognito mode to avoid cached results.
  • Pre-save links are working — Test every link in your bio, email, and social profiles.
  • Social media posts are scheduled — Queue up your announcement posts for the exact release time across Instagram, TikTok, X, and any other platforms.
  • Email blast is ready — Your newsletter should be drafted, reviewed, and scheduled. Include streaming links and a personal message.
  • Text your core team — Manager, publicist, distributor, anyone on the rollout. Confirm everyone knows their role for tomorrow.

Release Hour (Midnight - 6 AM)

Most releases go live at midnight in each timezone. Here's what to do as soon as it's live.

  1. Confirm the release is live — Check each platform manually. Screenshot any issues.
  2. Share to your personal socials — Even a simple "it's out" story goes a long way.
  3. Update your Spotify profile — Set the new release as your Artist Pick. Update your bio if needed.
  4. Submit for editorial playlists — If you haven't already, submit through Spotify for Artists. Note: the ideal window is 2-4 weeks before release.

Morning Push (6 AM - 12 PM)

This is when most of your audience wakes up. Time to make noise.

  • Post your main announcement — Carousel, video, or cover art with a personal caption. Be authentic.
  • Engage with every comment — Reply to DMs, comments, and shares within the first hour. The algorithm rewards engagement.
  • Text/DM your inner circle — Friends, family, collaborators. Ask them to stream, save, and share.
  • Monitor streams in real-time — Use Spotify for Artists and Apple Music for Artists to track early numbers.

Afternoon Momentum (12 PM - 6 PM)

Keep the energy going. Don't go silent after the morning push.

  • Behind-the-scenes content — Share studio footage, the story behind the song, or a clip of you checking your stream count.
  • Engage with user-generated content — Repost anyone who shares your music. This encourages more sharing.
  • Check playlist additions — See if any editorial or algorithmic playlists have picked up your track.
  • Follow up with press contacts — If you have a publicist or sent out press releases, check in on coverage.

Evening Wrap (6 PM - Midnight)

Close out the day strong.

  • Share first-day milestones — "1,000 streams in the first 12 hours" — your audience loves to celebrate with you.
  • Go live — Instagram Live, TikTok Live, or YouTube Premiere. Talk about the music, play it, answer questions.
  • Thank your team — Public shoutouts to everyone who made the release possible.
  • Plan your Day 2 content — The work doesn't stop. Sketch out what you'll post tomorrow.

What to Track

Keep a running doc (or better yet, use a tool like Team) to track:

  • Total streams across platforms
  • Playlist additions (editorial, algorithmic, user-generated)
  • Social media engagement (likes, comments, shares, saves)
  • Press coverage and blog features
  • Pre-save to stream conversion rate

Common Release Day Mistakes

  1. Going silent after the first post — The algorithm rewards consistent activity. Post multiple times throughout the day.
  2. Not checking all platforms — Your release might be live on Spotify but missing on Apple Music. Verify everything.
  3. Forgetting to update your profiles — Bio links, Artist Pick, header images — update them all.
  4. Skipping the personal touch — Mass-blasted content performs worse than personal, authentic posts.
  5. Not having a Day 2 plan — Release week matters more than release day. Keep the momentum going.
